| Mercutio, gentleman of Verona || |
| MERCUTIO is a character from William Shakespeare's famous tragedy Romeo and Juliet. He has a brother named Valentine. He is a relative of the Prince and of Paris. He is a close friend of Romeo and of Romeo's cousin Benvolio. Mercutio can easily be perceived as an exuberant jokester and free spirit. He encourages Romeo to get out of his love sickness of Rosaline and is glad when he says he is in love with someone new. Mercutio, however, never finds out who the object of Romeo's new affections are. When Romeo receives a death threat from Tybalt, Juliet's cousin, Mercutio assumes that Romeo is going to fight. However, Romeo declines because he has fallen in love with Juliet and, thus, Tybalt is his kinsman. Mercutio moves to fight Tybalt in Romeo's name but is killed accidentally when Romeo intervenes and Tybalt stabs him under Romeo's arm. Mercutio dies, cursing both the houses of Montague and of Capulet. His humor extends to the very last moment of his life, however, as he makes a joke right before he expires: "Ask for me tomorrow and you shall find me a grave man..." |
PB is Harold Perrineau, Jr. as he played the part wonderfully in the 1996 production of Romeo + Juliet.
